If by "rough and ready" you mean grossly flat in many songs, lispy, as well as unable to sing in the lower registers originally written for such songs as "Music of the Night", then I must agree with you. Yes, his acting fit well. Many times it is hard to find screen actors who can also sing (unlike years ago when a more rounded actor was made). So, it's amazing that they could find someone such as Butler to play the role. Even though he is not Crawford, he was a much better pick than other male actors who could not sing their way out of a cave.

How can someone be "too trained"? By that, don't you mean proficient in what's being done? Erik is a remarkable genius who is unhappy when he does not get something perfect. He is in a way a perfectionist, therefore he would want to be proficient. "He is a great teacher".

Have you paid attention to both Andrew L. Weber and the original novel? I'm not trying to be mean, but to me it seems like you are missing something. In the new movie, Madame Giry says that Erik is a genius, listing musician as one of his attributes. Since when have you heard a musician (a real musician, not a beginner) not be proficient with their instrument (in this case, voice)? When you think of an angel, do you not think glorious, perfect, heavenly being? I do not see an "Angel of Music" sounding mediocre and rough. In the novel, Christine is put under a great spell, both of awe and fright, at the sound of Erik's voice. In the movie she is portrayed as being incredibly entranced by his voice. His voice holds a mysterious power. When I think of such a voice I hear one so crisp, so pure, so powerful it is unbelievable. I hear a master. The voice of Butler was no master.

Although Gerard Butler is not a professionally trained singer, I think he did a fair job, considering it is a Hollywood movie. I think we're lucky we got him as opposed to a "rising star" sort of singer-- you see it a lot (mostly with actresses, but occasionally actors) lately. A young actor/actress will become a singer for the publicity boost. I mean, look at Paris Hilton! She's untalented, but she still got a record deal.

I think that Michael Crawford's voice is very good, don't get me wrong, but I think he's a bit too old to be Erik-- I read somewhere that for casting of The Phantom, you had to be a tenor-baritone and between the ages of thirty and forty (Michael Crawford is a bit too old). Gerard Butler was probably the best suited film actor they could find. I mean, they considered Antonio Banderas at one point.

Also, I think that the "untrained" quality of Butler's voice is one of the reasons why they cast him. How much training can a boy who, according to the ALW version, was displayed as "The Devil's Child" get? My guess is not much and we're lucky he is even coherent; the abuse suffered during those years would most likely cause more damage than the madness we see in the play and movie. I mean, if we're going with the book, it's possible that he got some form of training at some point in his life; so little is known about Erik's character. Andrew Lloyd Webber took some creative liberties for his version. But, I've digressed.

I find it difficult to compare the original cast to the movie cast. It's a lot like comparing chocolate to pizza. They are both delicious in their own way, but it's hard to make a fair comparison because they are so different.

Of course Crawford would be a "bit too old" now. My goodness, it's been nearly twenty years since the opening of POTO!! ALW got his idea from the novel, and the novel put Erik as Christine's much older elder. Crawford was the perfect age, according to your "between the ages of thirty and forty" criteria, back when it first opened.

Secondly, sure, the Phantom was called "The Devil's Child" in the newest version. But he was also called a "Musical Genius" a "Great Teacher" and a "Magician". As I've stated before, a musical genius would be proficient in his trade; his voice. He must have the ability in order to train another, like he did Christine. Angel of Music? This says to me, glorious, perfect, and heavenly. I don't care if the Phantom grew up with pigs as a family, if he is declared a "musical genius" he must show his attributes.

I believe ALW did the best he could with a nice-looking actor. He sacrificed a bit of voice for eye-appeal, which pleases the majority of young girls these days and works in the whole theme he was going for with this version (the awakening of Christine's more... mature side - I read an interview with him). The untrained ear would not pick up as much as I have. You may call my sixteen years of musical training a curse because I am more sensitive than the average person. Sets, costumes, over-all acting = amazing. Orchestra? Amazing. Voices... eh... that could have gone better. But actors and actresses aren't what they used to be. We either get acting, or you get singing or maybe just dancing. It is very hard to find both in one these days. We were fortunate things didn't go any worse. But, Erik with a sunburn and all the girls sighing "oh, the phantom's HOT", ignoring his voice? No no no, not good. Not good at all. Whatever happened to redoing scenes so that the song doesn't go flat in the middle? Heh. Hello, Hollywood? *knock knock* It's called video editing!

But, Erik with a sunburn

If you pay close attention to Gerard's makeup during the unmasked scenes, you'll notice it changes from looking scabby, sunburned, pussy, dead to looking lighter and not so horrible. It's bizarre, I think.

That, I do not deny. They had initally slated the movie for 1990 release, I believe and then life happened and the movie got held off for ages... Had they done the movie then, I'm sure that Crawford would have gotten the part and there wouldn't even be a debate. But then, there probably wouldn't be this generation of Phans, either.

Would that be a good thing? I guess not, though I do get a bit tired of 'OMG, GERRY IS SOOOO HOT!!!' phangirls.

New phans are always a good thing, even though they tend to overlook the fact that Gerard Butler can't sing to save his life.

And by the way, happy birthday, Christine.

My vote goes for other: personally, my favorite is John Cudia. *swoons* He's trained, powerful, and has all the physical nuances I imagine Erik would. I love Gerry, for it was his version I saw first. And I love Michael, because he is amazing. But John Cudia trumps them both, IMO.

Am I the only one who even likes, much less loves Gerard Butler's voice? I mean, he is the only man that I have ever heard of that can put me to sleep with one song. "Music of the Night."
(OOC: I'm not joking. I will actually fall asleep to the sound of his voice.)
The 2004 movie is how I was introduced to Phantom, so it will always be my favorite.
Michael Crawford, I think he has a really great voice, too,but I've only heard him on the CD of the Original London Cast Recording, and he's really good.
P.S. I'm going to see a production put on by the American tour in Tulsa next summer and I can't wait. It will be my first time!

Totally Obsessed Phantom Phan!

I am also a fan of: Lion King, High School Musical, Harry Potter, Disney in general, Days of Our Lives, Musicals in general, Dr. Suess, and Grinch!

Favorite quotes I made up:

"I have teeth and claws. Do not make me use them." TLK-inspired.

"Where's my lasso when I need it?" Phantom-inspired.

Hope you enjoyed reading the silly little ramblings of A.G.
